I am a HUGE fan of Google. And I assume I am lost in that fan club which potentially consists of millions of people worldwide. After the Social Network was released worldwide, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone came up with a film adaption on Larry Page. Sometimes, I believe bring together the two, Larry and Mark, and we’d be in the middle of a cyber revolution; maybe, have the ability to make our own music on the web, or create a virtual tourism enterprise – the boundaries are limitless.
Coming back to the reason of this post; I wonder whether our success and individuals in the 21st century will be determined by our length and breadth across this digital and virtual world. I am Devlina Ray, a Indian Bengali, 30 something young woman, temporarily based out of Germany, with some 250 odd friends on Facebook, a career in IBM making some decent money by Indian middle class standards, a fiancee in London, parents in Kolkata, India and a married sister in New Delhi. How many of these above pointers will determine my success as an individual in this current age? Had my father posed this question to himself, it would have possibly boiled down to the money he makes and his family. To our generation, it would be 1. the number of friends I have on Facebook or the number of people following me on Twitter 2. how much money I make and lastly 3. my family.
So where are we headed today, when we speak of success? Are the Larry Pages and Mark Zuckerbergs of the world dictating our parameters? Or shall we draw up those parameters ourselves? Something for me to ponder on in the years to come….
